Tailor-made concrete tunnel segments
Via our mother company Denys, Socea was involved in the construction of a rainwater basin (capacity +/- 8000 m³) in Sint-Pieters-Woluwe, Brussels. The project included a 375m long tunnel with an inside diameter of 5m20, running under the Grootveldlaan. The tunnel wall is made up of rings, which in turn consist of 310 different concrete tunnel segments, tailormade by Socea.
This project was handled for VIVAQUA, one of the largest water companies in Belgium. It’s activities encompass the production and distribution of drinking water, the management of sewer networks and flood control in Brussels.
The tunnel segments have to withstand the loads on the tunnel, and during drilling they also have to withstand the pressing forces of the tunnel boring machine. Since the progress of the tunnel boring machine depends on the quality and speed of the manufacturing of these segments, production efficiency is key. The number of segments per tunnel ring, shape of the segments, reinforcement and finish is custom-made and determined in consultation for each customer.
